KUNI News Department
Earns Numerous Awards
for 2002 Efforts!
Several state and regional
awards were
earned by the news department of public radio KUNI this spring. The awards
continue a long tradition of honors for news reports, features and commentaries produced
by the station, which operates at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls.
KUNI's news staff received eight awards from the Northwest
Broadcast News Association, which covers a six-state Midwestern region. KUNI
competed in the medium market radio division, which is determined by the number
of staff in the news department. The
awards were presented in Minneapolis in April.

Jeneane Beck followed legislation as it made its way through the Iowa Legislature.
Lawmakers were attempting to include coverage for mental health issues in
insurance and Medicaid plans. |

Pat Blank tells the story
of elderly twin sisters who raise their own sheep and goats, gather the wool
and spin it into socks. |
 | 1st place Broadcast Writing: "Gubernatorial Campaign"
Jeneane Beck followed candidates Tom Vilsack and Doug Gross on the campaign
trial for Governor. |
 | 1st place Talk/Public Affairs: "2nd District Forum"

Blank hosted a forum of candidates running for Iowa's Second Congressional

KUNI's news department earned several statewide awards announced in Des Moines
May 2-3.
Seven awards were presented by the Iowa Associated Press (AP) and
five were given to KUNI by the Iowa Broadcast News Association
(IBNA).
In the AP Large Market Radio competition, KUNI News Director
Greg Shanley and reporter Carole Shelley Yates won first place in
Documentary for "Energy in Iowa." In that same category Producer Pat Blank
won second for "Mayo Medical Developments." In General reporting, Des Moines
Bureau Chief Jeneane Beck won first place for "Mental Health Parity." In
Farm and Agribusiness, Blank won first place for "Soy Basics" and Beck won
second for "Animal Confinement". In the Feature category, Blank won third place
for "Twin Spinners and Beck received an honorable mention for " A Day with
Doug."
In the IBNA Large Market Radio competition, the news staff won
Overall Excellence, which is the only award given in that category.
Jeneane Beck won first place in Political coverage for "Gubernatorial
Campaign". In Farm and Agribusiness, Pat Blank won first for "Twin
Spinners" and an honorable mention for "Soy Basics." Blank also won third in
In-Depth/Series for Mayo Medical Developments.
