KUNI News Department's 2005 Awards


KUNI's news department earned several statewide awards announced in Iowa City the weekend of May 6, 2005. Ten awards were presented by the Iowa Associated Press (AP) and eleven were given to KUNI by the Iowa Broadcast News Association (IBNA).
 

KUNI Wins Iowa Associated Press Awards

Founded in 1848, The Associated Press is the backbone of the world's information system serving thousands of daily newspaper, radio, television and online customers with coverage in all media and news in all formats. It is the largest and oldest news organization in the world, serving as a source of news, photos, graphics, audio and video for more than one billion people a day.

The following KUNI staff was officially awarded at the Iowa AP Broadcast Convention in Iowa City on May 6, 2005.

KUNI Wins Iowa Broadcast News Association Awards

IBNA is a nonprofit corporation of radio-TV news directors, reporters, producers, public relations professionals and others from Iowa and its adjacent states, working together to improve electronic media news for our stations and the public.

IBNA recognizes outstanding work done by its members. During the annaul IBNA convention, an awards banquet is held to honor news reports in several categories. IBNA also awards the Jack Shelley Award, given to someone who has made substantial contributions to electronic media journalism in Iowa. Money raised through the contest is used to support IBNA activities.

KUNI Wins Northwest Broadcast News Association Awards

The Northwest Broadcast News Association is an organization, chartered in 1949, of radio and television journalists working in the six-state Upper Midwest region including Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

NBNA's aim is to serve and improve the broadcast industry through educational and professional programs.

The NBNA began with a meeting of a few journalists and University of Minnesota faculty members who recognized the potential of broadcast news in our society. The School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Minnesota continues to assist the NBNA in its ongoing effort to raise the standards of broadcast journalism in the Upper Midwest.

Awards are given to radio and television stations for achievements in spot news, general reporting, series, documentary, feature news, sports reporting, newscast, best audio, and best photojournalism. At the banquet a tape is played showing highlights of the award winning news segments.
